The Hanover Band is performing Rossini’s Stabat Mater at St Nicholas’ this Good Friday.

The 13th century hymn known as Stabat Mater, invites us to witness the crucifixion and death of Jesus from the perspective of his mother, Mary. This emotional, and often heart-rending hymn has been set to music by many composers, including Pergolesi, Palestrina, and Dvořák. Although Rossini started to write his version during the early 1830s, the first complete performance was not until 1842. However, the completed work was clearly worth waiting for as, according to contemporary reports, the audience at the opening performance was enthralled by what they heard.
