The Friends of Tortington Church are ten years old this April. The St Nicholas’ Barbershop Quartet provided the first fundraising event and have supported the Friends of Tortington every year from 2013 onwards. The path, the loo and the upgraded heating have all gained funds from the music, wit and enthusiasm of the Barbershop Quartet. Thank you.

The Friends continue to raise funds to support the overall maintenance costs of the church. This is a sum of about £1000 a year. In addition, we are embarking on fund raising to restore the bell turret (last worked on in 1906) and it is very clear from a drone survey that the weathervane is also badly corroded and at risk of toppling.

The painted bell turrets of Ford and Tortington Churches, and possibly St Nicholas’ in Arundel as well, were navigation guides for ships coming up the Arun. A renowned boat builder of Littlehampton – Hillyards – built many beautiful boats, including the Nancy Blackett, owned and included in many of the exploits described by Arthur Ransome in nine of his Swallows and Amazons adventures.

Alongside the music of the Barbershop Quartet on 30th April at 3.00 pm, we have a talk from Sophie Neville, who starred in the 1974 film version of Swallows and Amazons.

All in all, an amazing afternoon at Tortington Church. Please join us.
