Service of Nine Lessons and Carols

The traditional service of Nine Lessons and Carols dates from the 1880s. Its popularity spread rapidly, especially during the 20th century, thanks in no small part to the annual broadcast of the service from King’s College Cambridge.

Following the traditional processional hymn, Once in Royal David’s City, the readings and carols follow the story of salvation. The first reading from the Book of Genesis reminds us of humanity’s fall from grace in the Garden of Eden. The readings then take us from Abraham’s faithful response to God’s call, through God’s promise of a Messiah announced by the prophets, until at last Mary’s faithful response to God’s invitation to bear his Son heralds the coming of the Christ Child.

Year after year these wonderful readings, interspersed with carols old and new, tell anew of God’s saving love for his people. Please join us as in words and music we go ‘even unto Bethlehem’ to worship the Christ child born for us.
